Wildflower Seed Bombs
A perfectly hands-on way to get your child excited for gardening!
This is such a fun activity to do with your kids!
The best part is that every step includes a hands-on job for little ones to help with. And at the end, they will be so excited to water their seed bombs each day!
For all you clever parents out there– this is another perfect way to sneak in and reinforce lessons about gardening, responsibility, patience, following directions, you name it! Your child will have no idea they’re learning. They’ll just be soaking in all that knowledge like a plant soaks up water!
We love the positive natural consequences that come at the end of this experience. Talk with your child about what a plant needs to grow (Space, Soil, Sun, and Water) and it will be so gratifying to see their efforts pay off when their flowers begin to sprout and bloom!
Supplies
Colored Construction Paper or Newspaper
Child Scissors
Cups or Bowls
Wildflower seeds
Food Processor or Blender
💪 Fine Motor Growth at Each Step!
Grab a smock, and prepare your art area for some messy art (and potentially sensory✋🏿) play!
- Start by having your child cut or rip the colored construction paper. Learning scissor skills early can be SO beneficial for a pre-school aged child! If your child prefers to rip the paper, this is still awesome fine motor practice. They are pinching the paper, ripping carefully, and creating similarly sized pieces of paper as they rip. (Plus the sensory pay off of ripping can be a real winner with so many kids!)
- Once your paper is ripped into small pieces, place each color of paper separately into its own cup and cover with water
- Let soak for about 20 minutes or until the paper is starting to disintegrate.
- Remove your paper squares from the water, and squeeze about half the water out. Put them into your blender or food processor.
- Blend the paper mixture until it is one consistency and there are no more distinct pieces of paper. Blend each colored paper sheet individually.
- Remove the paper and mix with wildflower seeds, then form the paper pulp into individual seed bombs! Each sheet of paper could make 1-2 seed bombs, depending on the size you choose to make. If your paper isn’t sticking together, add back in some water, little by little to help it hold its shape.
- Once your Wildflower Seed Bombs have been formed, leave them to dry at room temperature overnight.
When you are ready to plant, make a small hole in your soil about 1 – 2 inches deep, place your seed bomb inside and cover with dirt. Then water liberally and make sure you remember to keep watering your flowers every day!
These are a perfect gift idea for neighbors, grandparents, cousins, friends. Who doesn’t love wildflowers?!
